TREE Group: Transdisciplinary Research in Engineering Education
"Engineering Education research group in France"

A reflection of our society, higher engineering education systems are increasingly diverse, heterogeneous, and interdisciplinary, much like complex systems.

TREE Objectives

  • to foster a rigorous approach to Engineering Education development and practice;
  • to anticipate and reflect on innovation in Engineering Education futures;
  • to design and develop a Research and Development activity in the field of Engineering Education (federating existing activities or projects, supporting new research activities or projects);
  • to combine methodologies and approaches in order to effectively integrate Research & validated practice into Engineering Education;
  • to promote IMT Atlantique and Institut Mines Telecom as a French leader in Engineering Education and as key players in European HEI.

 TREE Research topics

In the context of Engineering Education Research and Development and Innovation (EE RD&I), TREE topic areas span a range of categories, including:

  • supporting complexity & diversity in engineering education
  • transforming engineering education systems for better efficiency & quality alignments

The TREE research group promotes quality enhancement in engineering education, and aims to inform and support IMT Atlantique's engineering programs and ensuring that they are enhanced and up-to-date.

Transdisciplinarity is adopted as an applied research strategy and approach, providing a blend of perspectives from a broad range of disciplines, based on both theory & practice.

TREE Main Research Methods

  • Hupothesis-based research & Design-based research (inc. iterative cycles)
  • Qualitative and/or quantitative research
  • Didaktik engineering

TREE Fields of study and Application domains

  • French 'Grande Ecole' engineering programs and students (inc IMT Atlantique generalist Master degrees, inc. core, soft & transferable skills)
  • WBL Apprenticeship engineering programs & VET
  • Adult Education
