Prof. Johnny Johanessen

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Bergen, Norway

Prof. Johanessen is a research director in Ocean Remote Sensing at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center. Since 2010, he is also vice director and associate professor of the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen. Johannessen has 30 years experience in satellite remote sensing in oceanography and sea ice research. In particular, he has focused on the use of SAR to advance the understanding of mesoscale processes along the marginal ice zone and associated with ocean fronts and eddies. Johannessen has participated in 15 international field campaigns and has been chief scientist on 10 of these cruises, predominantly in the Arctic Marginal Ice Zones and in the Norwegian Coastal Current. In the last 10 years he has also been involved in development and implementation of operational oceanography both at national and international level. Johannessen has authored/co-authored more than 170 scientific and technical publications, reports and book articles of which 65 papers are published in International Review Journals and 22 are published as peer review book articles. Prof. Johannessen lectures in satellite oceanography and in operational oceanography at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway. He has lectured at training courses in remote sensing and its application to oceanography and sea ice research at the Norwegian Technical University (NTH) (spring, 1993), at Institute Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), Sao Paolo, Brazil (Dec. 1999), and at Departemento de Oceanographica Fisica CICESE, Ensenada, Mexico (Aug. 2000 and 2002). He has also lectured at the ESA Summer school in Frascati, Italy in August 2004 and the ESA-MOST Advanced training course in ocean remote sensing at Ocean University of China, Qingdao, China from 26- 30 October, 2004, at University of Hangshou in 2008, at Institute for Oceanography, University of Hamburg, Germany from 25-29 September 2006 and at University of Bergen, 22-26 September 2009.
