Bretagne Télédétection

The GIS BreTel (Bretagne Télédétection) or Scientific Interest Group (Bretagne Remote Sensing) – was founded in December 2009 in conjunction with the VIGISAT station which was operational in September 2009. This venture, creating new course, innovative themes and new jobs, was funded by the local authorities (Brest, Finistère “county” and Brittany Region) and the State through special so-called FEDER funds (PRESAGE 32635 VIGISAT project). There are 8 academic/research labs at the origin of the GIS, which aggregates around them the developments in the Remote Sensing domain.

One of the goals of the GIS BreTel is to become the French and European leader in the domain of research and academic programs linked to the exploitation of high resolution satellite data for a better knowledge of the environment and an increase in security. The GIS was created with teams from the Brittany region, but one of its first goals is to bring the developments into a European context. Indeed the Brittany region is part of the European initiative NEREUS (« Network of European Regions Using Space technologies»). And the GIS has a mission to bring the VIGISAT station in the national (and international) scientific framework programs. The GIS has authored two papers in a NEREUS publication in the framework of the GMES European initiative (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security): “Coastal Zones Remote Sensing and Management” and “Use of GMES services and observation data for the elaboration of a Regional Plan of Ecological Coherence– Green and blue belt networks”.
